Alerts

It is important to have multiple ways to receive weather alerts. You can get weather information and warnings through your favorite TV meteorologist, radio, social media, the internet, outdoor sirens, text messaging services, and smartphone apps.  The key to staying informed is to have multiple ways of receiving weather alerts as technology failures, delays or other unforeseen circumstances may occur.

One recommended option to get alerts is the MEMA App. This mobile app from the Mississippi Emergency Management Agency (MEMA) provides emergency information, preparedness tools, and weather alerts, along with options for statewide highway information. The app is free to download and is available on both the Apple App Store and Google Play Store.

Another way to receive weather information is through a NOAA Weather Radio. The National Weather Service broadcasts continuous weather information 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. When programmed correctly, NOAA Weather Radio will alert you about warnings in your area, providing an audible tone and a visual alert. These radios can be programmed for one or multiple counties to receive weather warnings and can operate on battery backup in case of a power outage. NOAA weather radios are available at many electronics stores for an affordable price.

Wireless Emergency Alerts (WEA) is another method to receive weather warnings directly on your cell phone. Government agencies use this feature to send urgent messages to impacted areas without requiring any additional apps or software; these messages resemble standard text messages.

**Important Note:** We highly recommend not turning off the WEA alerts to ensure you receive timely and potentially lifesaving warning information.
