MEMA Moves Forward Requesting FEMA to Validate Damage

PEARL, Miss. (MEMA) – The Mississippi Emergency Management Agency agency completed damage assessment validations in Jackson and Jasper Counties following severe weather from June 18-19, 2023.  MEMA is now requesting FEMA Region IV to validate those assessment numbers; FEMA’s numbers must be used to request a Major Disaster Declaration for individual assistance.  Currently, FEMA Assistance is NOT available for Jackson and Jasper County residents.

MEMA-validated numbers show:

  • Jackson County: 377 homes/apartments damaged
  • Jasper County: 51 homes damaged

The State must meet FEMA requirements to be approved for the individual assistance declaration. In the meantime, MEMA is tracking citizens’ needs and working closely with non-profit organizations to assist survivors.

As for public infrastructure, the State is working with the counties to measure debris and assess the damage to public infrastructure to determine if a federal request for public assistance is attainable.
