PEARL, Miss. (MEMA) – The Mississippi Emergency Management Agency recently joined Nextdoor, which is a private social network for neighborhoods and local communities.
Through Nextdoor’s Public Agencies program, members of MEMA’s External Affairs team will have the capability to share valuable emergency preparedness, response and recovery information with residents.
One element that sets Nextdoor apart from other social media platforms is their geo-targeting feature. By utilizing this feature, MEMA will have to ability to share exclusive messages locally to specific counties and communities directly impacted by certain disasters.
“We’re excited about the opportunity to join Nextdoor’s Public Agencies program. It will undoubtedly help to enhance the way MEMA communicates with the public by providing us with a unique platform to effectively share our agency’s message with all Mississippians,” says MEMA Executive Director, Greg Michel.
Individuals are able to sign up for the free service by visiting nextdoor.com. IOS and Android users can also download the app directly to their smartphone to access the social network.
All Nextdoor users living in Mississippi will automatically receive MEMA messages through the app, however users will have the option to opt-out if they choose. The Nextdoor neighborhood network remains private, and MEMA representatives will not be able to see what neighbors are discussing on non-MEMA posts.
Mississippians are still encouraged to visit our website at msema.org and follow our Twitter and Facebook pages for up-to-date information.
