PEARL, Miss. (MEMA) – Governor Tate Reeves issues a State of Emergency in anticipation of Hurricane Delta. At the time of this release, Delta is expected to make landfall Friday, October 9. This hurricane could cause damage to homes, businesses, other property and threaten the safety of Mississippians.
A state of emergency is an administrative tool that authorizes the use of state resources to aid in storm response efforts. MEMA has distributed 160,000 sandbags to Hancock, Harrison and Jackson Counties.
Multiple shelters remain on standby to open. Because of COVID-19, MEMA Executive Director Greg Michel is urging citizens to use public shelters as a last resort. Masks must be worn inside the shelters.
