MEMA the National Weather Service and other partners are highlighting the importance of severe weather warnings and alerts for the first day of Fall Severe Weather Preparedness Week.
Smartphones will alert you of a tornado, flash flooding or other warnings in your area with a unique ring tone and vibration.
Wireless Emergency Alerts (WEA) is a public safety system that allows customers who own certain wireless phones and other enabled mobile devices to receive geographically-targeted, text-like messages alerting them of imminent threats to safety in their area.
There are also numerous other methods to receive weather watches, warnings and advisories. Examples include:
NOAA Weather Radio: Watches and Warnings issued by NWS air on these radios.
Television Stations: Local or national news stations monitor and broadcast weather alerts.
AM/FM Radio: Radio stations are required to air Emergency Alert System messages.
Social Media: MEMA partners with the NWS to post severe weather alerts on Twitter using the hashtag #MSWX. MEMA and the NWS constantly updates Facebook and Twitter with weather graphics, alerts and information about imminent severe weather.
